Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise at the age of a small child. Her aunt worked the evening shift as a nurse so she could continue her passion for theater and art during the day. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned by example that art was an avenue for action. In the same way, her mother was well-educated and encouraged the importance of speaking up through the art of. Although DuVernay spent her childhood in Compton with her family she was a summer resident with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the marches for civil rights over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the local town of Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Selma, Alabama was the inspiration she used to produce a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was in school. She began working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalls being commissioned to sit at the home of one member of the jury, and then take a look at their trash. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work that she was assigned, the journalist decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from college. In 1999, she founded her own business of public relations, dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
